When To Take Maternity Photos + 6 More Tips for a FUN Session
Being maternity photographers in Tampa, we get a lot of questions and when to take maternity photos.
If you’re asking about the time of yearto take maternity photos, it really depends on where you live. We are blessed to have many gorgeous locations that serve as perfect backdrops for portrait sessions year-round.
For example, Philippe Park in Safety Harbor is a location we’ve been using for many years due to the variety of backdrops in a small area. There are gorgeous Spanish moss-filled oak trees, stone steps and walls, tall grass, open fields, and even a small beach.
If you’re asking what time of day to take maternity photos, we will always always always recommend golden hour (see examples below). Golden hour, also known as magic hour, is a specific time period shortly after sunrise or before sunset when the quality of natural light is warm, soft, and diffused.
During golden hour, the sun is low on the horizon, which creates a warm, golden, and glowing light that creates absolutely gorgeous photography. It’s flattering and serene and delivers some really eye-catching prints!
But let’s dive into this a little deeper. Here are 7 tips on when, where, and how to take maternity photos so you feel comfortable and confident!
When Jenni and Justin booked us to take their maternity pictures, we gave them a few options to choose from. They went with our suggestion of Philippe Park because that location had multiple backdrop options.
We know it is a cliché, but Jenni was positively glowing! And the light was incredible. Jenni loved our “glowy” photos, so she trusted us to capture her in the (literal) best light.
Jenni also took our advice and brought a second outfit. This is a great idea because having different looks for any portrait session allows for the opportunity to use the photo for different purposes, express different moods, and it is great to have a backup outfit in case you’re not thrilled with how your first choice photographs.
This session went by so smoothly because we prepped Jenni and Justin before the shoot. So, we thought we should ease the minds of soon-to-be-moms everything!
Here are 7 tips we give to every Mom for their upcoming maternity photoshoot:
1. When To Take Maternity Photos
Every pregnancy is different, but we recommend scheduling your maternity photo shoot between 32 and 36 weeks.
This allows for your beautiful baby bump to be showing, and you can still be comfortable posing during your session.
2. Splurge on Hair and Makeup
We offer hair styling and makeup services. This will ensure you feel and look your best for your session. A professional stylist will consider the location of the session and what will look best in photos.
Make sure you have clothing, shoes, and accessory choices pick at least several days in advance. We offer maternity gowns for your session.
And remember to do any ironing the day before the session!
4. Fuel Your Body
Eat before your session, but not a big meal. Make sure you are hydrated, and bring water. Don’t drink too much before your session so we don’t have to stop the flow with too many bathroom breaks.
We offer aFREE Style Guidethat can help you narrow down what to wear for your maternity photoshoot. It goes over outfit aesthetics for men, women, and even kids!
But to help get you started, here are things to consider:
For undergarments, choose a neutral color strapless bra and seamless underwear
If you want to show off that belly, choose a crop or bandeau top.
Choose a buttoned-down shirt rather than a pullover shirt – again, so you can show some of your bellies if you like.
You can opt for a long, flowing, or form-fitted dress. We often have moms-to-be pick one of each for their sessions.
For the winter months, a cardigan sweater is a good choice.
For men’s clothing, remember it is mom’s time to shine. A neutral color button-down with pants or nice jeans will work.
In couple and family maternity sessions, coordinate but don’t match outfits.
Feel free to bring the baby’s ultrasound image, baby shoes or an outfit, letters/initials of the baby’s name, etc. But with props, remember less is more.
6. Create a Stress-Free Day
Take the night before to pamper yourself with a spa day to feel refreshed and rejuvenated. Get a prenatal massage, do some prenatal yoga, or engage in any activities that help you relax and feel good about yourself.
On the day of, listen to calming and/or romantic music on the way over. During the session, don’t be afraid to take breaks during the photo shoot to rest, hydrate, or touch up your hair and makeup.
Lastly, have a supportive photographer who understands your vision and can help create a relaxed and enjoyable experience. Say goodbye to stress and hello to stunning maternity photos!
7. Be ready to get close!
We definitely recommend having a support system on the day of your shoot! This can be your partner, a friend, or a family member. They can help provide emotional support and help with any last-minute preparations.
It’s also a great opportunity to include them in some pictures! Remember, this is a day to express and share your joy! For couple and family maternity sessions, we will be posing you close together so we can feel the love.
