From the first time we speak with you, we try to make your family photo shoot process a breeze.
We know arranging your family photo session can feel overwhelming, so we make the scheduling process as simple as possible and make capturing your special family moments what it is supposed to be… fun!
Here are 7 ways to reduce chaos on family photo day and ensure it is just another day at the park (or beach).
Schedule a day and time that is good for your family.
Every family is different. If you have little ones, we definitely want to schedule around nap times. If you have older kids, we want to schedule a day free of activities (or at least a day that isn’t too booked). You’ll need the time to get ready yourself and get the kiddos ready.
Between getting ready, travel time, and the session itself – plan for about twice as much time as you think you’ll need to avoid a massive rush.
Check the traffic several times before you leave, just in case there are traffic delays. Anticipate having to leave earlier than expected.
Tip #2: Know What To Wear To Your Family Photo Shoot
We are huge fans of preparation. Especially when it comes to coordinating outfits for your family photo shoot.
Have your outfits ready and do a test drive at least 3 days before your session. This includes:
Hair accessories
Shoes/socks
Jewelry
Undergarments
Shapewear
This will prevent last-minute crazies. We also recommend avoiding stiff, uncomfortable clothes because this will show on your face.
Have everything ironed and good to go the day before your session. Also, consider changing into your outfits at the location (if it is an option) to prevent wrinkles, spills, snags, etc., on the drive over.
PRO TIP: if you have young kiddos, put one of dad’s old t-shirts over their outfit to protect them from any car ride mishaps.
We’re more than happy to offer up our two cents if you have questions about your outfit choices. If fact, we have an entire What to Wear Guide with tips on choosing outfits for the whole family! Download it here.
Tip #3: Schedule Hair/Nail Appointments 1 Week Prior
Schedule haircuts about a week before your session and wash your hair the day before, so you have that great, easy-to-style second-day hair.
If mani/pedis are your thing, make an appointment 1-2 days before. Your hands will show in photos, and if you’re wearing sandals or going barefoot – we’ll see those toes too!
We recommend sending the shot list via email or text. You can also send examples via Pinterest or text so we get a feel for the vibe you’d like us to capture. Make sure you send any examples at least 3 days before your session.
Also, no worries if you don’t have ideas— we’ll have plenty. Take a look at our GLOW Gallery to see examples of our work (if you’re not in Tampa, make sure you thoroughly look through your local photographer’s gallery!)
Tip #5: Get EXCITED!
“How do I get the kids and hubby excited about the photo session?”
When you talk to the kids about the family photo session, make it sound fun!
Let them know you are excited about getting pictures taken as well. You can even make a family day out of it and schedule a kid-friendly outing after your photo session.
Get the kids involved by letting them choose their outfits (if they’re too young, let them choose between 2 pairs of shoes) or props you may want to include.
Tell the young ones the photographer is a friend to eliminate the fear of strangers.
Tip #6: Get Hubby on Board
The majority of the time, moms are the ones scheduling the family photoshoot.
Sometimes dads aren’t so keen on the idea.
So, share with him how important this is to you and involve him in the decision-making. Acknowledge his efforts, and ensure him we will keep it light and make the session as painless as possible.
Tip #7: Focus on Your Love
Having the clothes, hair, etc., taken care of is great, but remember, the most important thing is to enjoy this time with your family and celebrate the love you have for one another.
Then, relax and have fun while we capture photos you’ll treasure for many years to come!
