A classic collage adds warmth and personality to any room. Follow these steps to create an eye-catching family wall gallery:
Best Room: Common choices include the living room or a bedroom.
Number of Frames: A collage can have as many as you want, but start with 4 or 6. Opt for frames that match your home’s decor style. Whether rustic, modern, or eclectic, frames should complement your aesthetic.
Photo Selection: You can curate a mix of candid family shots or display certain milestones, like newborn photos!
Layout Planning: A collage is perfectly rectangular or square, with even mixes of horizontal and vertical images.
Tell your family’s story through a gallery that chronicles special moments. Here’s how:
Best Room: The biggest wall you can find (usually a hallway or dining room). This will serve as your family’s ongoing canvas.
Number of Frames: This will get bigger and bigger in time, so you can start out with 3 and end up with 30! You can also choose to incorporate memorabilia, such as a child’s first drawing or a vacation souvenir.
Photo Selection: The more milestones you go through (engagement, wedding, pregnancy, newborn, family trips, etc.), the bigger your storyline wall will get!
Layout Planning: A large collage like the one above would be ideal for including multiple milestones and keepsakes. Don’t be afraid to use mismatched frames!
Map Growth: Begin with engagement photos and continue through birthdays, holidays, and milestones.
Create Sections: Divide the wall into sections for each family member. Add individual shots and group photos to celebrate the dynamics.
Looking for something more simple and modern? Elevate your family wall gallery to an artistic masterpiece with this dramatic approach:
Best Room: Hallway or living room
Number of Frames: Choose three large canvases that fill your wall space, creating a commanding visual impact.
Photo Selection: Select your top 3 favorite photos from your photography session. Install overhead lights above each canvas to highlight your family’s showcased moments.
Layout Planning: Position the canvases in a row for an art-gallery-inspired effect. An Instagram grid style with lights is another great option for this family gallery wall (see below)!
Creating Space on Your Gallery Wall for Future Additions
You’ve curated a stunning gallery wall that beautifully reflects your family’s journey, but what about leaving space for those upcoming memories?
For a balanced and visually appealing look, aim for a ratio of around 2:3 or 3:4. This means that the total width of the frames or canvases should take up about two-thirds to three-quarters of the wall length, leaving the remaining space for future additions.
For example:
If you have a large wall that is 10 feet wide (120 inches), consider using frames or canvases that take up around 80 inches (2/3 of the width) horizontally. This would allow you to fit 3 large canvases and 5 8×10 frames with room to spare for future additions.
If you’re using 3 large canvases that are each 30 inches wide, they would collectively take up 90 inches, leaving you with 30 inches of wall space for additional frames or canvases.
Remember, these ratios provide a starting point, and you can adjust them based on your personal preferences and the specific dimensions of your frames or canvases.
Leaving enough space for future additions ensures that your gallery wall can evolve over time while maintaining a well-proportioned and visually pleasing arrangement!
Thinking about getting prints, canvases, or metal frames for a gallery wall? You might want a photographer to do it for you! Here’s why!
